40 people killed on Ireland’s roads so far in 2015


Co Down

A man in his 20s died following a crash on the Comber Road, Ballygowan, Co Down on Monday 16 March.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash.

M50 Dublin

A 62-year-man died when the car he was passenger in, left the road and collided with a lamp-post and protective barrier on the M50 motorway, Dublin Saturday 14th March.

The collision occurred on the M50 motorway Southbound between junctions 10, Ballymount and 11, Tallaght around 12.45am. The car overturned before landing on its side after colliding with the barrier.

The man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at scene.

The driver of the car, a woman aged 60 years, was also taken to Tallaght Hospital with serious injuries. Her condition is described as being critical.

They were the only occupants of the vehicle. No other injuries were reported.

County Cork

A 30-year-old man died when the car he was driving collided with another on the R586 at Coolfadda, Bandon, County Cork on Friday 13th March.

The two vehicle collision occurred shortly before 6pm. The man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the second car, a woman aged 37 years, was also taken to Cork University Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

There were no passengers in either vehicle and no other injuries were reported.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who was travelling on the R586 at Coolfadda between 5.40pm and 6pm to contact them at Bandon Garda Station on 023 8852200, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.


Co Mayo

A woman in her 50s has died when she was struck by a car which was travelling in the direction of Swinford on the N5 at Bohola Co. Mayo on 5th March 2015.

The male driver of the car was not injured.


Co Down

A 55-year-old man died following a two-vehicle crash on the A1 near Dromore, County Down on 2nd March.

A woman was taken to hospital following the collision. Police said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.


2014

According to provisional figures from the gardaí, a total of 196 people lost their lives in the Republic of Ireland in 2014, compared to 190 in 2013, a 3% rise. 79 died in Northern Ireland, compared with 57 in 2013.


2015

According to provisional figures from the gardaí, 31 people have died on the state’s roads so far in 2015.

In the North, three people died on the roads in January, with four in February.

S0 far, nine people have been killed on Northern Ireland’s roads in 2015.

In total, provisionally, 40 people have died on roads on the island of Ireland in 2015.
