  • Earned in your name as the policyholder
  • Earned on a private car policy in Ireland or the UK
  • Last used within 24 months of our inception date
  • Earned on an Irish Learner Permit or full Irish/UK/EU licence
  • Available for use and;
  • Not being used on another policy

Please note: if there is a gap between your previous policy expiring and our policy commencing, we may require clarification of the gap in insurance cover. If the vehicle registration does not match, we may require additional documents to verify the purchase date of the vehicle.

We will require proof of your no claims bonus within 14 days of the policy inception date.

If you have earned driving experience as a named driver on someone else’s policy, please see “Named Driving Experience” below:

Number of Years NCD

Your NCD is usually outlined on your Renewal Notice or Certificate of No Claims Discount. Most insurers will outline the total number of years earned (carried from insurer to insurer) and the equivalent discount percentage from their NCD scale (e.g. 3 years = 50% discount).

Discount scales differ depending on the insurer so we will always ask for the total number of years earned and convert it to our discount scale.

Claim Free Driving

An insurer may also outline the number of years ‘Claim Free Driving’, this means, the number of years you have been insured with them as the policyholder and not made a claim e.g. NCD = 5 years, Claim Free Driving = 1 year). We give discount based on the total number of years earned so if you are unsure, please contact us.

Protected NCD

Once you reach a full NCD (usually 5 years) you may be eligible to protect your discount, this is known as a ‘Protected NCD’. You can only select this option before purchasing, which can be found at the bottom of the ‘Premium Page’. It cannot be added after the policy is incepted.

A protected NCD allows you to make 2 at-fault claims (claims where the insurer is unable to recover their losses from another source) in a 5-year period before your NCD is affected. Following your third claim, your NCD will be reduced in line with our step-back scale at the time.

If you chose to protect your NCD, it will be outlined on your Statement of Facts.

If you have never held an insurance policy in your own name, but you have gained experience as a named driver under someone else’s policy, you may be eligible for an introductory discount (subject to terms and conditions). When completing your quotation, if you do not include an earned no claims discount, you will have the option to include named driving experience (if applicable). Acceptable driving experience must be (including but not limited to):

  • Earned as a named driver on a spouse or parent’s policy (excludes open driving and motor trade policies)
  • Earned on a private car policy in Ireland or the UK
  • All years claimed must be earned on a full, clean Irish licence (no penalty points or motoring convictions)
  • You as the named driver must have a claim free driving record (includes all claims regardless of fault)
  • The period named must be consecutive and up until the start of our policy with no breaks in cover

If you purchase a policy that includes named driving experience, we will require the following to support your application:

  • A copy of all sections of the driving licence for all drivers named on the policy
  • Letters of named driving experience from the relevant insurers covering the relevant number of years

Please note: Policy schedules, Certificates of Motor Insurance, Statement of Facts and Renewal Quotations etc. are unacceptable as proof of named driving experience. You must obtain a “Letter of Named Driving Experience”, which can be requested from the insurer but may incur a charge. If your driving experience is spread over multiple policies with multiple insurers, you must obtain letters from each to cover the relevant number of years with no gaps in the policy dates e.g. 3 years driving experience, policy due to commence on 22/02/2019, we require letters covering 22/02/2016 to 22/02/2019.
