Motor Tax Ireland: A Complete Guide

Motor Tax Ireland: A Complete Guide

Everything Irish drivers need to know about calculating, paying, renewing, and understanding motor tax in the Republic of Ireland.

Motor tax is a legal requirement for almost every vehicle used on Irish public roads. Whether you’re a new driver, buying a car, importing a vehicle, or simply renewing your disc, this guide explains exactly how motor tax works in Ireland in 2026 — including rules, rates, exemptions, refunds, and common FAQs.

1) What Is Motor Tax?

Motor tax is a charge imposed by the Government on most motor vehicles in Ireland. It applies whether the vehicle is driven daily or simply parked on a public road.

Motor tax revenue supports:

  • Road maintenance

  • Road safety programmes

  • Public transport infrastructure

  • National and local transport services

Motor tax is administered by:

  • The Department of Transport

  • The National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF)

  • Local Motor Tax Offices

  • And the online system MotorTax.ie

2) What Types of Vehicles Are Subject to Motor Tax?

In Ireland, motor tax applies to all mechanically propelled vehicles kept or used on Irish public roads. The money collected from motor tax is used to help maintain and improve the roads in Ireland. including:

  • Private cars

  • Commercial and goods vehicles

  • Motorcycles and tricycles

  • Buses and coaches

  • Agricultural tractors (when used on public roads)

  • Mobile machinery (depending on use)

  • Vintage vehicles (reduced rate)

  • Electric vehicles

  • Imported vehicles once registered in Ireland

If a vehicle is in a public place, it must be taxed or declared off the road. You can check specific motor tax rates by entering your vehicle registration number on the official motor tax website.

3) Motor Tax Exemptions in Ireland

Some vehicles and owners qualify for full exemption from motor tax under Irish legislation.

✔ Common Motor Tax Exemption Categories

  • Vehicles eligible under the Disabled Drivers & Disabled Passengers Scheme

  • Diplomatic vehicles

  • State-owned vehicles, including:

  • Garda cars

  • Defence Forces vehicles

  • Ambulances / HSE vehicles

  • Local authority vehicles

  • Vehicles used exclusively on private land

  • Certain vintage vehicles used only for parades and displays

  • Vehicles adapted specifically for wheelchair transport

How to Apply for Exemption

Depending on the exemption, you may need:

  • Form DD1 (Disabled Drivers/Passengers Scheme)

  • Medical certification

  • Vehicle adaptation certificates (if applicable)

  • Registration with Revenue where required

Once approved, the exemption will be applied to the vehicle’s record on the NVDF.

4) How Motor Tax Is Calculated (2026)

Motor tax for private cars in Ireland is calculated based on when the car was first registered, and in some cases, its fuel type or emissions. The motor tax rate for petrol and diesel cars varies based on their engine size and CO₂ emissions.

4.1 Cars Registered Before July 1, 2008

For private cars registered before July 1, 2008, tax is based on engine size in cubic centimetres (cc).

4.2 Cars Registered From July 1, 2008, to December 31, 2020

For private cars registered from July 1, 2008, to December 31, 2020, tax is calculated based on CO2 emissions using the NEDC value.

4.3 Cars Registered On or After January 1, 2021

For private cars registered on or after January 1, 2021, tax is calculated based on CO2 emissions using the WLTP value.

4.4 Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are taxed at a lower annual rate of €120 per year.

4.5 Commercial and Heavy Vehicles

Commercial vehicles are taxed based on their weight and type. The annual rate for a vehicle between 4,000kg and 12,000kg is €500, and for vehicles over 12,000kg, it is €900.

A) Cars Registered Before 1 July 2008

➡ Taxed by engine size (cc)
Rates increase based on cubic capacity.

B) Cars Registered Between 1 July 2008 – 31 December 2020

➡ Taxed by CO₂ emissions (NEDC value)
This uses the original CO₂ motor tax bands (A–G).

C) Cars First Registered from 1 January 2021 Onwards

➡ Taxed by CO₂ emissions (WLTP value)
This newer system uses a broader set of CO₂ ranges.

D) Electric Vehicles (EVs)

➡ EVs benefit from a significantly reduced motor tax rate

E) Commercial Vehicles

Taxed based on gross vehicle weight (GVW)

F) Miscellaneous Vehicles

Includes:

  • Agricultural tractors

  • Vintage vehicles

  • Motor caravans

  • Mobile machinery
Each has its own rate category.

G) Duration Options (ROI Standard)

Motor tax can be paid for:

  • Annual (12 calendar months)

  • Half-year (6 calendar months)

  • Quarter-year (3 calendar months)

Motor tax discs are issued for periods of three, six, or twelve calendar months. These periods are counted as full calendar months, meaning each tax period starts on the first day and ends on the last day of the relevant month.

H) Motor Tax Arrears (Per Month)

If a vehicle is kept on a public road without tax or a valid off-road declaration, arrears apply:
Charged monthly before tax can be renewed.

(If you'd like, I can add the exact 2026 rate tables — Private Car CC Bands, NEDC Bands, WLTP Bands, Commercial Rates, etc. You can upload the rate file or I can generate them.)

5) How to Pay Motor Tax in Ireland

Irish drivers can pay motor tax using three fully approved methods:

5.1 Online Taxing

You can pay your motor tax online using the motor tax online service at www.motortax.ie. The online motor tax service is a secure internet platform that allows you to renew your motor tax through a secure link. If you are taxing a new vehicle online for the first time, your PIN is the last six characters of the VIN., your vehicle insurance details, and your debit or credit card details. Online payments are processed securely, and you must enter your card details in the appropriate section. Please note that not all vehicle types are eligible for online taxing, so check eligibility before proceeding. The renewal form must be completed accurately to ensure your application is processed without delay.

5.2 In-Person Payment

Paying in person at your local Motor Tax Office is a preferred method for some drivers. Visit the Motor Tax Office at the specified address to submit your payment and documents directly.

5.3 Postal Payment

To renew your motor tax by post, you must complete the renewal form and include the credit card details section if you are paying by card. Accepted payment methods by post include bank draft, cheque, postal order, or credit card. Do not send cash by post. Ensure the completed form and payment are sent to the correct address for processing.

✔ 1. Online (Most Common)

www.motortax.ie
Available 24/7
Payment: debit or credit card

✔ 2. In Person

At your local Motor Tax Office
Accepted payment methods vary by county (typically card, bank draft, postal order).

✔ 3. By Post

Send the correct forms (such as RF100A, RF100, RF111) to your Motor Tax Office.

6) Motor Tax Renewal & Reminders

  • Renewal notices are posted to the registered owner before expiry. The renewal notice contains the PIN required to renew your motor tax online.

  • These reminders are a courtesy — the owner is responsible even if a reminder is not received.

  • You can renew your motor tax every 3, 6, or 12 months.

    Renewal durations:
  • 3 months

  • 6 months

  • 12 months

If your tax expires, arrears may apply.

7) Change of Vehicle Ownership & Motor Tax

Motor tax does not transfer when a vehicle is sold. You must register the change of ownership with the Department of Transport and update the vehicle registration certificate and vehicle registration certificate number. Accurate vehicle details and owner details are required for the transfer of vehicle registration. If you sell your vehicle or trade it in for a replacement, you must register the change of ownership to ensure all details are correct and compliant with motor tax regulations.

✔ Seller’s obligation:

  • Complete the ownership change online or via the VRC

  • Notify the NVDF (legally required)

✔ Buyer’s position:

  • You cannot tax the car until the Department of Transport processes the ownership change

  • Once registered, the new VRC will be issued

  • You can then tax the vehicle online or in person

8) Motor Tax Disc

Every taxed vehicle must display the current disc (current motor tax disc) on the windscreen as proof of valid motor tax. You must display the current vehicle licence (tax disc) on the windscreen of your vehicle.

✔ Lost, Damaged, or Destroyed Motor Tax Disc

To obtain a replacement:

  • Complete Form RF134

  • Have the form witnessed at a Garda station

  • Submit with fee to your Motor Tax Office

9) Motor Tax Refunds

Motor tax refunds are available only in defined situations, including:

  • Vehicle scrapped/destroyed

  • Vehicle stolen

  • Vehicle exported

  • Vehicle declared off the road in advance

  • Owner becomes medically unfit to drive

  • Change to an exempt tax class

Refunds are generally calculated based on the unexpired period of the tax disc, usually from the first day of the month after surrender or destruction. Payment for refunds can be made by money order, as well as other accepted methods. Note that motor tax is not transferable between owners, and back tax is charged if the due date is missed.

Use Form RF120 to apply.

Refunds cannot be backdated unless an Off Road Declaration (ORD) was made before the untaxed period.

10) Vehicle Off the Road — Tax Rules

Ireland uses a proactive Off Road Declaration (ORD) system. If your car is parked and not being used, you still need to pay motor tax unless you've made an official declaration that it is off the road. The declaration of non-use must be made in the same month that your current motor tax disc expires. The minimum period for declaring a vehicle off the road is three calendar months, and the maximum is twelve calendar months. These periods must be complete calendar months, starting on the first day and ending on the last day of a month. If a vehicle is declared off the road, motor tax does not need to be paid for that period. If your vehicle is temporarily off the road, you do not have to pay motor tax for that period. You can cancel the declaration at any time by renewing your tax in your local motor tax office.

Key rules:

  • You must declare in advance if your vehicle will be off the road

  • Minimum period: 3 months

  • ORD must be completed before your current tax expires

  • You cannot retrospectively claim a refund for past untaxed dates

Form used: RF150 (if declaring at your Motor Tax Office)

11) Changing Vehicle Use

If your vehicle switches categories — for example, from private to commercial — motor tax rules change.

You may need:

  • Form RF111

  • Insurance confirming new use

  • Revenue documentation (for commercial classifications)

  • Proof of business use (for goods vehicles)

  • A weight docket (required for taxing commercial and imported vehicles as proof of the vehicle's weight)

  • The first motor tax application form RF100 (can be obtained from the motor dealer or seller of the vehicle, especially for new registrations)

The tax class will be updated and charged at the rate for the new category.

For motor tax purposes, a 'vintage' vehicle is defined as a vehicle that is 30 or more years old.

12) Imported Vehicles & Motor Tax

Importing a vehicle into Ireland involves:

  1. VRT registration with Revenue/NCTS

  2. Irish registration number issued

  3. Motor tax payment before using the vehicle on public roads

Motor tax amount depends on:

  • WLTP CO₂ rating (post-2021)

  • NEDC rating (if vehicle qualifies)

  • Engine size (older imports)

13) Not Paying Motor Tax — Consequences

Driving without paying motor tax is an offence in Ireland.

Penalties may include:

  • Fixed charge fines

  • Court fines

  • Penalty points (depending on situation)

  • Vehicle clamping or seizure

  • Liability to pay full arrears

  • Difficulty selling the vehicle (ownership cannot transfer with outstanding arrears)

Gardaí have the authority to enforce tax compliance at the roadside.

14) Replacing Your Motor Tax Disc

If your motor tax disc has been lost, damaged, stolen, or destroyed, you can request a replacement through your local Motor Tax Office.

✔ How to Replace a Lost or Damaged Motor Tax Disc

To obtain a replacement, you must:

  1. Complete Form RF134
    – This is the official “Application for Replacement Documents” form.

  2. Have the form witnessed by a Garda
    – A Garda officer must sign and stamp the form to confirm your identity.

  3. Submit the application
    – Send the completed RF134 along with the required fee to your local Motor Tax Office.
    – Some offices also allow you to submit it in person.

  4. Receive your new disc
    – Once processed, a replacement motor tax disc will be posted to you.

Important Notes
  • You cannot drive a vehicle on a public road without displaying a valid motor tax disc.

  • Replacement discs are not issued online — the RF134 process is mandatory, there is a small fee to obtain a replacement motor tax disc.

  • If your disc was stolen, Gardaí may ask for a brief statement or incident number.
