Car insurance is mandatory in Ireland, and it can be expensive but there are plenty of ways to keep your premiums down. Here’s a few smart tips to help you save when insuring your car:
1. Pay Annually
Paying your premium in one go is usually cheaper than monthly instalments, as interest is often added to monthly payments.
2. Enhance Your Car’s Security
Installing an insurer-approved tracker, immobiliser, or alarm can reduce the risk of theft and may help lower your premiums.
3. Choose a Less Powerful Car
Vehicles in lower insurance groups typically cost less to insure. If you're buying a new car, and looking for a minimum premium consider one with a smaller engine or lower insurance classification.
4. Reduce Your Mileage
Driving fewer miles can reduce your premium. Just be honest about your estimate under reporting mileage could invalidate your car insurance policy.
5. Increase Your Voluntary Excess
Agreeing to pay a higher voluntary excess can lower your premium. Just make sure it’s an amount you can afford in case you need to make a claim.
6. Park in a Safe Location
Parking in a private driveway, secure garage, or off-road space can reduce your risk of theft or damage, which may lower your insurance costs.
7. Build Up a No-Claims Discount
The longer you go without making a claim, the bigger your no-claims discount—potentially leading to significant savings over time.
Add a Named Driver
Adding an experienced driver (such as a parent or partner) to your car insurance policy can sometimes lower the premium. Make sure they genuinely use the car to stay within policy terms.

Does the value of my car affect my car insurance premium?
Yes, it can. Higher-value cars – such as new or electric models – often cost more to repair or replace if damaged or stolen, which can lead to higher insurance premiums. These cars are usually placed in higher insurance groups due to their performance, technology, and repair costs. Insurance premiums typically rise as the insurance group number increases. Insurers consider a range of factors when calculating your premium, including: - Your driving experience (including whether you hold a provisional or full licence) - Your claims history - Your geographical location - The type and age of your car - Your age - Your occupation and how you use your car - The level of cover you choose At its4women.ie, we calculate your motor insurance premium based on your individual details – so you only pay for the cover that fits your lifestyle.
Which countries does its4women motor insurance cover me in?

Can I drive a new car without vehicle insurance in Ireland?
No - car insurance is a legal requirement to drive in Ireland. You must have insurance to compensate someone for damages and injury in an accident you cause. You’ll need to arrange motor insurance cover before driving the car, even for a short distance.
How do I choose the best car insurance cover for me?
Think about what level of protection you need. Comprehensive insurance cover offers the highest level of protection, including accidental damage, fire, theft, and third-party liability. If you’re looking for lower-cost options, Third Party or Third-Party, Fire & Theft might suit you. Compare your needs, budget, and vehicle value before deciding. Yes, you can. While we don’t offer multi-car policies, you can take out separate policies for each car under your name. However, your no claims bonus can only be used on one car policy at a time.
How much does car insurance cost in Ireland?
It depends on a number of factors, car insurance isn’t “one size fits all”. Insurers will consider your age, location, driving experience, car type and driving history (e.g. accidents, claims, no claims, speeding offences, number of penalty points etc). You can get a free, no-obligation quote in minutes on our website.
Can I drive other people’s car under my insurance policy?
Sometimes - If your policy includes the Driving Other Cars Extension, you may be covered third party only to drive someone else’s car. This extension only applies to policyholders and isn’t standard on all policies. Plus, any damage caused to the car itself won’t be covered which means you would be liable for any damage costs. You’ll find this benefit in your Policy Certificate or Schedule if included.
Is car insurance more expensive for males or females?
Insurers can no longer use gender as a rating factor when pricing insurance. Your car insurance quote is based on factors such as age, location, driving experience, car type and driving history.
