8 Things you need to know about getting engagement ring insurance

1. Get engagement ring insurance as soon as possible

Your soon-to-be fiancé can insure the ring as soon as it is purchased and, in their possession, – they may be waiting for the perfect moment, which could go disastrously wrong if something happens your precious rock in between times. And as soon as it’s on your finger… what happens if you lose the ring? If someone steals it? If it gets damaged? The sooner it’s insured, the sooner you’ll be protected.

2. Choose a coverage provider

When it comes to insuring your engagement ring (or any other valuable jewellery) you can purchase an extension (specified item) to your home insurance policy with its4women.ie that covers your engagement ring specifically.

Its4women.ie home insurance policies automatically provide cover in respect of unspecified items outside of the home up to a sum insured of €3,000 (sports equipment up to a limit of €2,000 and mobile phones up to €250 for any one item and any one loss) with a single article limit of €1,000. Items over €1,000 must be listed as "Specified”. Note: Hearing Aids must be listed as “Specified” regardless of value. Items over €5,000 must be supported by a relevant valuation done within the last 5 years.

Our innovative Online Insurance Customer Portal allows you to access your insurance quote, purchase your insurance policy and make adjustments to your insurance policy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

3. Think about your lifestyle

It’s very important to think about your lifestyle when you insure an engagement ring. For example, if you travel a lot, you’ll want to make sure the policy covers your ring. Its4women.ie provide worldwide cover for Unspecified Personal Possessions for 30 days in any one period of insurance. Specified Items are covered against any physical/accidental loss or damage anywhere in Ireland and Europe, and up to 60 days World-wide in any Period of Insurance. Exclusions apply.

4. Consider accidental loss or damage

Your “Specified” and “Unspecified” valuables are automatically covered for accidental loss or damage away from the home with its4women.ie. If you don’t require accidental damage cover for your contents but wish to extend this cover to your ring, it’s already included, free of charge.

5. Understand what is not covered

Make sure to ask a potential policy provider if there are any circumstances that aren’t covered, to give you a better sense of which provider can offer the best ring insurance. Its4women.ie home insurance will have limitations for valuables based on your contents sum insured.

Other exclusions include: we will not cover any amount over €2,000 in total in respect of theft or disappearance of jewellery from hotel or motel rooms during your absence from such rooms. Further exclusions include theft or disappearance of jewellery from baggage unless such baggage is carried by hand and under your personal supervision.

6. Know what is required to make a claim

If in any circumstance you need to make a claim, you must notify your insurance company as soon as reasonably possible giving full details of what has happened.

If you have an its4women.ie home insurance policy, you must contact our appointed Claims Manager within 30 days. You can call our Claim line, anytime day or night. We are on duty 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, to give help or advice and progress your claim as fast as possible. Our claims number is 01 2075110.

7. Remember to re-appraise your ring

The good thing about an engagement ring is that it’s usually a great investment! The value of your engagement ring could increase over time, so it’s important to have your ring revalued every two to three years for insurance purposes. Consider going back to the same appraiser, as they should retain a copy of your original appraisal, instead of starting from scratch.

8. Re-evaluate your overall insurance needs

In addition to engagement ring insurance, this could be a good time to re-evaluate all your insurance needs to account for expensive or hard-to-replace engagement and wedding gifts.
